Refuelling Solutions commits to another year at the Keith Diesel & Dirt Derby
By on April 27, 2018
Keith is a small farming town in South Australia approximately 225 km SE from Adelaide at the junction of the Dukes Highway and the Riddoch Highway. It is sometimes referred to as the Lucerne capital of Australia due to the high number of Lucerne growers in the region. At the 2011 census, Keith had a population of 1,320 and since then the population has increased to around 3,000, attracting people who like the fresh Australian outback lifestyle.
The Keith Diesel & Dirt Derby is the brainchild of Glen Simpson, a valued Maxi-Tankers customer, who, along with Refuelling Solution’s very own, Johnny O’Loughlin, are two of the local characters of Keith who have worked tirelessly to take this event from concept to a roaring success in 3 years.
The idea of a tractor pull and demolition derby attracting a few hundred people to the area has turned into a major event with almost 14,000 people through the gates in 2018, and for a small town, this event is proving to be a major success for the locals. All of the local sporting clubs and many service providers are involved and the town opens it’s heart to everyone. The events are spectacular with tractor pulls, jet boat races and the star attraction, The Header Demolition Derby.
With no river or appropriate creek to support jet boats, a light bulb moment, born around a farm table, resulted in the decision to bring in earth moving equipment, fuelled by Maxi-Tankers, to prepare and flatten the ground. Water is pumped from the bores up through 8 cm pipes to create a lake approx 6-8′ deep and 15′ wide creating a perfect run for the jet boats. The place roars with the noise of jet boat engines and the squeals of the kids and the enthusiasm of the spectators adds much excitement to the day. A direct result of the excellent organisation of Johnny at the recent March event confirms that Keith will hold a round of the Australian Jet Boat Championships later in the year.
Refuelling Solutions and our customers work side by side in the Keith and the surrounding community helping to focus on the good things that a country town offers. Johnny gives his all at the annual show and with his brother Vinny, create an “Old O’Loughlin’s Farm” for the kids by gathering a menagerie of baby animals ranging from lizards, sheep, dogs and day old chicks which are brought in from Kapunda (350km trip) by another of the RFS team, Bob SPUD Morton. All of the firewood to keep the patrons warm at night is chopped and brought in by Johnny, who then spends hours behind the bar helping patrons relieve their parched throats and tell their stories. Johnny’s heart is generous and the energy and commitment to his working life at RFS and helping his community is legendary. Thanks Johnny, SPUD and Craig Miller, another member of the Maxi-Tankers team who is seen on the road daily, servicing the community with the delivery of thousands of litres of fuel into equipment. Thank you to all of our customers who bring energy to, and who create a fun environment showcasing the country town of Keith. Let’s do it again next year!
